Measures to prevent brown planthoppers from harming rice

Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) is one of the most dangerous pests on rice plants in our country. In addition to causing direct damage, brown planthopper is also a vector for transmitting yellow dwarf and stunted leaf disease, extremely dangerous diseases for rice plants, which caused widespread epidemics in our country a few years ago.

To limit the harmful effects of brown planthoppers, it is necessary to apply a combination of measures in a synchronous and reasonable manner in the Integrated Pest Management Process such as: Do not sow continuously (if possible, let the land rest between two rice crops for about 20 - 30 days); clean the fields; use planthopper-resistant varieties;

Do not sow too densely (should sow 100 - 120 kg of seeds/ha, or 70 - 80 kg/ha, if sowing in rows); sow simultaneously and concentratedly in each field, field area, according to the schedule of the local plant protection agency to avoid planthoppers;

Fertilize with a balance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; do not use broad-spectrum pesticides at the beginning of the season. To protect the natural enemies in the rice field, regular inspection of the rice field for early detection and timely spraying of pesticides to kill planthoppers is an indispensable measure, often decisive.

Regarding drugs, there are currently many types of drugs on the market used to prevent and treat rice pests. However, for brown planthoppers, according to the experience of many people in the Mekong Delta in recent years, the following drugs have been very effective, namely:

1- Schezgold 500WG: A specific drug for brown planthoppers (even when the planthoppers are resistant to the drug), the drug has contact and stomach toxic effects; has deep penetration and conduction properties. The drug has an immediate effect on the conduction nervous system and motor nerves of insects, so after being infected with the drug, although the planthoppers do not die immediately, they can no longer harm the rice plant.

The drug kills both nymphs and adults, has little effect on natural enemies, so it does not cause brown planthopper outbreaks. Regarding dosage, you can mix 1 packet of drug (15 grams)/16 liter tank, after mixing, spray 2 tanks for 1,000 m2. If the density of planthoppers is high, or the rice field is full, you can spray 2.5 - 3 tanks for 1,000 m2.

2- Comda gold 5WG: Is a drug with contact, toxic, repellent and deep penetrating effects; good adhesion and spreading ability, very high prevention efficiency (even with drug-resistant pests).

Being a biological pesticide, it is less likely to cause pesticide resistance in pests; because it has little effect on beneficial insects in rice fields, it does not cause brown planthopper outbreaks. Regarding dosage, you can use 1/3 of a package of medicine (10 grams/package) mixed in a 16-liter sprayer, and spray 2.5 - 3 bottles/1,000 m2 after mixing.

3- Sairifos 585EC: Because it is a mixture of two active ingredients belonging to the organophosphate and synthetic pyrethroid groups, the insecticide's effectiveness is greatly enhanced; in addition to contact and stomach toxicity, the fumigation also has the ability to repel and antagonize insects, so the prevention effect is very high. Regarding dosage, 25 - 30 ml of the drug can be mixed in a 16 liter tank, after mixing, spray 2.5 - 3 tanks/1,000 m2.

4- Sargent 6G: This is a contact, stomach and fumigant insecticide with a wide spectrum of action and a fast and strong insecticide effect. Regarding dosage, Sargent 6G can be spread in the field at a rate of 8 - 10 kg/ha when brown planthoppers appear. When spreading, there must be a layer of water 3 - 5 cm deep in the field and this water level must be maintained for 3 - 5 days.

In tall rice fields, good rice fields with dense vegetation, the rice should be divided into strips about 1.5 m wide so that the pesticide can be sprayed down to the base of the rice stalks, then more planthoppers will die.
