Police said tens of thousands of people took to the streets of major Brazilian cities on June 17 to protest the multi-billion dollar cost of the Confederations Cup - a warm-up tournament for the 2014 World Cup - and high public transport costs.

Police said tens of thousands of people took to the streets of major Brazilian cities on June 17 to protest the multi-billion dollar cost of the Confederations Cup - a warm-up tournament for the 2014 World Cup - and high public transport costs.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil's most populous and economic capital, police estimated about 30,000 protesters marched down Paulista Avenue.

At the opening match between Brazil and Japan at Mane Garrincha Stadium on June 16, police also had to use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd outside the stadium, in which about 22 people were arrested.

Earlier on June 14, about 5,000 people, including many university students, blocked major streets and smashed several buildings in Sao Paulo city, causing traffic chaos.

Clashes broke out between police and protesters, leaving more than 100 people injured and nearly 200 arrested./.
