The war in Eastern Ukraine, which has lasted since April, has killed more than 3,000 people. After the ceasefire agreement on September 5, a supplementary agreement was signed on September 20. Although the peace agreement was signed in Minsk, public opinion believes that the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Eastern Ukraine is only nominal. According to the 9-point agreement, both sides agreed to stop using all types of heavy weapons in populated areas and withdraw heavy artillery from the ceasefire zone. However, fighting broke out after the agreement. On September 21, a large protest broke out in Moscow to protest the policies of pursuing war. For many people, this was nothing strange, but the protest that took place just one day after the peace agreement in Eastern Ukraine also revealed many unusual things.

Peace and stability are hard to find in Ukraine, where President Petro Poroshenko on September 21 affirmed that Ukraine has received all the necessary weapons from Western countries, and warned that its forces are ready to defend themselves if the new peace plan signed with the separatists fails. Meanwhile, only the Russians know best whether the Kremlin will pursue its support for the rebels in eastern Ukraine to the end. The United States and Europe have not abandoned Ukraine, and Russia certainly will not turn a blind eye when its interests are at stake and the region near its borders is threatened. That is why guns are still fired and blood continues to be shed in eastern Ukraine. Decisions for the immediate and long-term national interests are necessary, but whether it is necessary to go through war and express the spirit and will of "populism" with the blood and lives of the people and soldiers is something that is deeply shaking the social life of the countries involved, most clearly manifested in Russia.

On September 21, the BBC reported on tens of thousands of people marching against the war in Moscow. Of course, there were also opposition forces that had a “great deal of affinity” with President Putin. The number of marchers in Moscow increased and their political views were clearly expressed in banners and placards protesting the war in Eastern Ukraine and Russia’s involvement. The Russian and Ukrainian flags were carried along with slogans chanted repeatedly: “Say no to war”, “Stop the lies”… In St Petersburg, similar marches also took place on the same day.

In Moscow, there is still no consensus on the number of protesters, with Western media reporting that 20,000 people participated, Russian authorities claiming only about 5,000 people, while protest organizers claimed that up to 50,000 people participated. At the same time, supporters of the separatists in Ukraine also participated in the march as a response to their opposition.

Protesters on September 21st opposed the policies of pursuing war and called for the restoration of peace in Ukraine. It is worth noting that many protesters expressed their opposition to Russian aid and asked Russia to end its military support for the separatists. Although Russian officials have always affirmed that Russia does not provide military aid and does not intervene in the separatist uprising in Ukraine.

According to AP and BBC, the protest on September 21 had more notable political nuances than a protest against the war outside Russia's borders. Protesters expressed skepticism about many of the state's foreign policies. They also did not ignore the responsibility of the leaders for the political instability in the region, which led to human losses and economic difficulties in the country. Security forces were mobilized, Ukrainian police controlled the situation and dealt with the subjects and banners that criticized President Putin excessively. This was the largest protest in 2014 in Russia to protest the war. This shows that there is a strong division in Russian society. Along with that, anti-war sentiment and concerns that the government is getting carried away with pursuing war policies and forming a war state are a reality, expressed through social reactions with many unusual signs.
