During the experiment, experts stored purified water and fruit juice in two thermos bottles of the same type. After a period of time, the heavy metal content in the fruit juice increased dramatically and exceeded the allowable limit. Analysis of the purified water sample did not show a similar phenomenon.

Thus, there are two issues that are harmful to human health that need to be discussed in the Chinese government's recommendation not to use thermos bottles. That is the harmful effects of asbestos fibers and the heavy metal content exceeding the permissible threshold. To analyze this issue more deeply, many experts have warned people to give up and not use these types of bottles.

Assessing the harmful effects of asbestos on human health, Dr. Tran Tuan - Head of the Standing Committee of the Health Policy Advocacy Alliance, who has spoken out to eliminate asbestos from human life and activities, said: "WHO has shown that asbestos causes lung, larynx and ovarian cancer, mesothelioma (a type of cancer of the pleura and peritoneum) and asbestosis (pulmonary fibrosis). Asbestos-related diseases are preventable, and the most effective way to prevent these diseases is to stop using all forms of asbestos to prevent exposure."

According to Dr. Tuan, Vietnam is currently the country that uses the most types of asbestos in the world. The reason is that people cannot recognize what materials contain asbestos, so they continue to use and come into contact with it without knowing that they are exposed to a source of cancer-causing disease.

Regarding the issue of heavy metals in stainless steel bottles increasing dramatically when storing fruit juice, Dr. Tran Thi Phuong Thao - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, said that heavy metals can react with organic acids in fruit juice and form metal salts. According to experts, most thermos bottles are made of stainless steel, which is actually an alloy of several heavy metals such as Chromium (Cr), Iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni). Therefore, if the stainless steel is made from good, quality materials, it will be safe and can be used to store food.

However, for Chinese thermos bottles, the quality of the material as shown in the above study is not guaranteed, which will cause many dangers. Accordingly, it (heavy metals) can react with organic acids in fruit juice and create metal salts. The danger is that these salts dissolve in water and enter the body, causing poisoning, especially the digestive tract, the first and direct contact with this toxin.

Also related to this issue, answering the Health and Life newspaper, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Nam - Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Hanoi University of Pharmacy) said that people should not use stainless steel bottles or stainless steel thermoses to store acidic drinks such as fruit juice and tea.

Because these types of water will stimulate the release of heavy metals in stainless steel, leading to chemical reactions that create carcinogens. Professor Nam noted that housewives should absolutely not use stainless steel or large plastic jars to soak fruit juices year after year such as apricot juice, strawberry juice, hawthorn juice, etc. Because fruits with a lot of acid will react with stainless steel compounds and plasticizers, creating toxins. These toxins can cause cancer in users.
