On Sunday, North Korea welcomed the attack on the US ambassador to South Korea, calling it a “deserved punishment” for its enemy. However, Pyongyang denied any involvement in the attack. The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country, an organization affiliated with the North Korean Communist Party, later condemned South Korea’s “evil intentions” for trying to shirk its responsibility and “intensifying its slanderous campaign” against the North Korean state in other countries around the world.

It is known that on Thursday, while preparing to have breakfast at a conference, Mr. Mark Lippert - US Ambassador to Korea was attacked by a man with a razor blade. Upon hearing the news, South Korean President Park Geun Hye and the Washington administration both strongly condemned the attack aimed at disrupting the alliance between Korea and the US. US Secretary of State John Kerry also warned that the US will never give in to threats.

Shortly after the attack, South Korean police arrested Kim Ki Jong, the attacker, on charges of attempted murder. On Friday, police announced they would launch an investigation to determine whether there were any links between the attacker and the North Korean regime.

The suspicions of the South Korean police were well-founded when people reviewed the file of Mr. Kim Ki Jong. According to the police file, Mr. Kim Ki Jong, 55 years old, is a devout nationalist. Mr. Kim believes that Washington is one of the main obstacles to reunification of the Korean Peninsula. From 2006 to 2007, Mr. Kim Ki Jong visited North Korea more than 6 times. In 2010, he received a suspended sentence for throwing a rock at the Japanese ambassador. In 2011, Mr. Kim Ki Jong tried to build a memorial to Mr. Kim Jong Il after the death of the North Korean leader.
