"There is no substitute for Geneva, which is one reason we reaffirm our commitment to the Geneva process. We consider the Geneva process to be the only path to a lasting political solution for Syria," said Ms. Nauert.
Asked if the US would be involved in any way in the summit, she replied: "I am not aware of any involvement on our part."
According to her, the US supports the efforts of Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's special representative on the settlement. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Staffan de Mistura.
In July, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that a summit of the leaders of Türkiye, Russia, Germany and France would take place on September 7 in Istanbul.
