The Ministry of Education and Training has just synthesized, received, and explained the opinions of organizations and individuals on the Draft Comprehensive General Education Program.

It is noteworthy that History was proposed by teachers and History experts to become a compulsory subject in the Draft, but through this summary, it is still an elective subject.

The Ministry of Education and Training believes that, according to the Draft of the general education program, in high school, Citizenship with the Fatherland (according to the Draft) is one of the four compulsory subjects. This subject is an integration of three subjects: Ethics - Citizenship, History and National Defense - Security, meeting the basic requirements of the new general education program, which is to orient the development of students' qualities and abilities.

Thus, a separate History subject no longer exists in the system of compulsory subjects.

Orientation of civic values (rights and obligations), international integration, compliance with the law on national defense and security education, basic general knowledge is completed at primary and secondary school levels. At high school level, there is career orientation, few compulsory subjects, time is spent on elective subjects and topics.

The Ministry of Education and Training affirms that History and National Defense - Security education are compulsory education contents for all high school students.

In addition, at high school level, students can choose to study History in Social Sciences (a subject for students who are inclined towards fields in the fields of Natural Sciences and Technology) or History and some extended, in-depth study topics on History (a subject for students who are inclined towards Social Sciences and Arts).

At the same time, the Ministry of Education and Training also believes that this content is also integrated into other subjects.

During the time of soliciting public opinions on the Draft Comprehensive General Education Program, the Vietnam Education Electronic Newspaper also received many comments from teachers directly teaching in general schools, experts, professors, and associate professors in history, all of whom agreed that History should be a compulsory subject.

In particular, veteran Hong Lam (Nghe An) wrote an article "History is gone.... Does the Fatherland still exist?" The article raises the current situation and worries about the position of History subject which is currently being neglected.

“If you don’t study History or study it superficially, how can you understand the profound meaning of the national flag, of the national anthem “Tien Quan Ca” that you sing on Monday morning when saluting the flag at the beginning of the week, how can you understand the minute of silence when saluting the national flag… And when singing the national anthem, do you understand the phrase “…The flag is printed with the blood of victory, carrying the soul of the country…”?” veteran Hong Lam shared.
