Ministry of Transport proposes Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to study monorail

April 5, 2012 17:39

Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has just proposed that Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City study adding monorail to the urban public transport network planning, contributing to reducing traffic congestion.

Transit stations also need to be planned to ensure connections between urban transport modes, such as: subway, elevated railway, BRT bus, monorail...

The Ministry of Transport assigned competent authorities to work with monorail investors to conduct research on routes with a traffic volume of 300,000-400,000 passengers per day, ensuring compliance with the city's traffic planning.

According to the head of the transport sector, monorail is one of the types of public passenger transport that is effectively used in many cities around the world. The Ministry has set up a survey team on this type in Chongqing city (China), and found many advantages, such as: maximum transport capacity (with an 8-car train), frequency of 3.5 minutes, it can transport 30,000 passengers/hour in one direction.

Meanwhile, the investment cost of monorail is only half that of subway, construction time is short, land occupation is small, less noise... The transportation capacity of this type meets the requirements of public passenger transportation in urban areas with a population of about 7 million. When running during rush hour, monorail does not encounter any obstacles because it operates on a separate track, so transportation is very efficient.

With these advantages, the Ministry of Transport believes that researching monorail investment on inner-city routes with a need to transport 300,000 passengers per day is appropriate, contributing to solving traffic congestion in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the near future.

In mid-2010, Vietnam Construction Import-Export Corporation (Vinaconex)submittedThe Prime Minister proposed a BOT monorail project to solve traffic congestion in the west of Hanoi. This project has also received support from traffic experts.
