Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs early repatriation of Vietnamese sailors' bodies

On December 8, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore said that immediately after receiving information that the VP Asphalt ship belonging to the Vipco Petroleum Transport Joint Stock Company was attacked by pirates, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore urgently worked with Singaporean authorities to find out information and take measures to support and help the crew members on board.

Singaporean authorities said that after departing from Singapore port to transport asphalt to Vietnam, the ship VP Asphalt and 16 sailors on board were hijacked by pirates in the early morning of December 7.

When the pirates withdrew, the sailors discovered that Tran Duc Dat was seriously injured and died after being taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore for emergency treatment.

Currently, the VP Asphalt ship is anchored in Singapore waters. The crew members on board are in stable health.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore to continue to closely coordinate with domestic and local authorities, Vipco Petroleum Transport Joint Stock Company and the family of Mr. Tran Duc Dat to complete the necessary procedures to soon bring the victim's body back to the country according to the family's wishes.

The Embassy will also continue to work with Singaporean authorities to clarify information related to the incident and take necessary protection measures for the crew members on the VP Asphalt.
