"Forgotten" sex toy for 10 years in the body

The 38-year-old woman presented to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary complaining of severe weight loss, unsteadiness and lethargy. She also experienced mild sexual dysfunction for several weeks.
Upon closer examination, doctors were shocked to discover a foreign object had entered the patient’s bladder from her vagina. Surgery to remove the foreign object revealed it was an 11cm long sex toy.
Medical staff were even more shocked when the female patient revealed that she had used the sex toy with her partner 10 years ago. The patient also said that she was drunk at the time and that she could not remember whether she had removed the toy from her vagina or not.
According to the case report in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the patient had a normal IQ, no signs of depression or psychiatric disorders, and was not the victim of any abuse. However, the “forgotten” sex toy caused her to suffer potentially life-threatening injuries.
Doctors said the woman had a rare condition called vesicovaginal fistula, which is an abnormal passageway that allows urine to flow into the vagina. She also had obstructive nephropathy, in which a blockage in the bladder causes urine to flow back into the kidneys.
After removing the foreign object, doctors treated the injury and the patient was discharged from the hospital.
A doctor at Aberdeen Hospital declined to comment on the case, but confirmed that it was unusual for such a large object to be left inside a woman’s body in full view of her and her partner without her realising. It was the first time a sex toy had been left inside a woman for 10 years.
However, this is not the longest time a foreign object has been lodged inside a woman’s vagina. According to medical literature, a woman once kept a foreign object in her vagina for 35 years.
Other strange objects found in this sensitive area of the female body include a hairspray can cap, a cylindrical tin can, a plastic cup, and a child’s toy. A 2009 study even described how doctors discovered a 3x5cm foreign body in the vagina of a 72-year-old woman, but neither the patient nor the doctors could identify what the object was.
According to experts, people often deny or deny the existence or origin of such foreign bodies when they are first discovered, due to embarrassment or fear of ridicule. This phenomenon is relatively common in patients with Münchausen syndrome, a psychiatric condition in which patients fake symptoms to attract attention or sympathy. Psychiatric disorders, alcohol abuse and child abuse have also been reported in children with this condition.
