According to statistics from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), each year there are over 2,000 aircraft incidents due to pilots being hit by laser beams.

To address this problem, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is developing glasses that can filter out a wide range of laser wavelengths.

When a pilot flies low at night in a dark cockpit, they can be distracted or temporarily blinded by a flash of laser light. Although there are no official statistics on laser-related accidents, civil and military aviation authorities believe it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

Additionally, laser weapons have become a part of military arsenals since the Falklands War in the 1980s. Therefore, the MoD is particularly interested in developing a type of eye protection against laser beams.

Glasgow-based Thin Film Solution is developing a new pair of glasses that uses a composite structure consisting of a polycarbonate layer combined with a special light-absorbing dye. The lenses are coated with a special layer to filter out different laser wavelengths.

Currently, MoD is still researching and overcoming the disadvantages of this special type of glass, after being put into testing in May 2012./.
