For Vietnamese people, Tet cannot be without chicken. In this era of “wealth and etiquette”, many tycoons spare no expense and effort in finding unique and expensive chickens to eat during Tet.

Dong Tao chicken "rides" plane to the South

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2013, many people were amazed when they heard the news that 4 purebred Dong Tao chickens of Mr. Nguyen Trong Tich's family in Dong Tao commune, Khoai Chau district, Hung Yen were being sold for more than 35 million VND/chicken. Previously, on the Lunar New Year 2012, a pair of Dong Tao roosters and hens of Mr. Hieu's family near Mr. Tich's house also set a record with a price of 70 million VND/pair.

Although the price is much higher than normal chickens, it seems that Dong Tao chicken is becoming a luxury trend, showing the class of the rich who are willing to spend money to buy it for spring feasts.

During Tet, the rich flock to hunt for Dong Tao chickens.

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2012, to have purebred Dong Tao chickens to celebrate Tet, two real estate tycoons in the South took the trouble to go all the way to Dong Tao to choose chickens, then rented a hotel, bought plane tickets to bring the chickens back to the South... spending tens of millions of dong.

For a long time, Dong Tao chicken has been known as a rare chicken breed in Vietnam. According to legend, in the past, Dong Tao chicken was a product offered to the king. Rich people also often used this “rare delicacy” chicken to worship and give to each other. In addition, with its funny body and legs, this breed of chicken is also raised as a pet.

Spend tens of millions to hunt for 9-spurred chickens

The story of the 9-spurred chicken, which was thought to only exist in fairy tales, has now appeared in real life thanks to the efforts of people with a passion for the unusual.

Mr. Le Huu Tho (residing in Tang Nhon Phu A ward, District 9, Ho Chi Minh City) has just bought a rooster with 9 spurs. Mr. Tho said he bought this rooster from a resident in Can Duoc district, Long An province for 30 million VND.

The chicken owner said that when it was born, this chicken only had one spur like normal, over time the number of spurs gradually grew. In addition to the main spur, there were many smaller spurs arranged diagonally along the chicken's legs, which looked very interesting.

Mr. Dung (born in 1984, from Saigon) also runs a farm raising strange chicken breeds, including nine-spur chickens in Dong Nai.

With the desire to bring the 9-spur chicken breed back to the South for breeding, Mr. Dung persistently went to Coi village, Xuan Son commune, Tan Son district, Phu Tho province. And he bought a pair of very valuable white 9-spur chickens from the village chief's house. With his efforts and perseverance, he successfully bred the 9-spur chicken breed. To date, he has sold nearly 50 pairs of chickens at a price of 3 million VND/pair.

Hunting for 'Red Book' Mong chickens to celebrate Tet

For a long time, when talking about Ha Nam, many people only know about Dai Hoang braised fish, Tien Vua bananas, Phu Van flower village... but few people know that this low-lying plain is also a place to raise Mong chickens, a type of chicken listed in the Red Book. Mong Red Book chickens are purebred ancient chickens, with big feet, similar to Ho chickens (Bac Giang), and delicious meat quality like Dong Tao chickens (Hung Yen). They are called Mong chickens because they are "native" chickens that were discovered, raised and bred in Mong village (now Tien Phong commune). Since then, Mong chickens have been preserved and their genes have been preserved from generation to generation.

Rare Mong chicken breed can only be raised in Tien Phong commune.

This is a type of chicken that can only adapt to the climate and soil of a particular region, so only Tien Phong commune in the whole country can raise it. That is why, every time Tet approaches, traders from all over flock here to "hunt" Mong chickens.

Rush to hunt for Tet fighting cocks

Recently, a number of provinces in the Mekong Delta have seen a boom in the raising of fighting cocks. Near the Lunar New Year, cock brokers in big cities flock to the countryside to hunt fighting cocks, supplying the rich people who love cockfighting during the Tet holiday.

The closer to Tet, the more cock brokers try to hunt for fighting cocks.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lai (in Vinh Thanh commune, Cho Lach district, Ben Tre) - a person with experience in caring for and "reading" chickens - said: People in Cho Lach district, in addition to taking care of ornamental flower gardens, also take the time to raise several flocks of fighting chickens, earning over millions of dong each month. Sometimes, if they come across a few fighting chickens that are good at fighting, the profit is 3-4 times higher than selling a meat chicken. According to Mr. Lai, just by raising a few flocks of breeding chickens, each year they can select dozens of fighting chickens worth from several hundred thousand to several million dong each. Each fighting chicken has its own appearance, diverse colors, and different "heroic" personalities, especially red chickens, gray chickens, black chickens, and purple chickens.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu (in Song Phu commune, Tam Binh district, Vinh Long) shared: “Raising fighting chickens is easy to make money but very hard and elaborate, requiring the breeder to have a lot of experience, expertise, especially the ability to identify the appearance, choose the brave ones, with majestic feathers and colors, strong legs, regular fins and majestic crowing. In addition, they also have to know how to pamper, care for and cherish the chickens like their own children”.
