German Minister of Vietnamese origin visits Vietnam
German Minister of Economics and Technology Philipp Roesler will pay an official visit to Vietnam from September 17 to 19, according to information from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hanoi.

In Hanoi, Mr. Roesler will meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and other senior representatives of the Vietnamese Government. According to the schedule, on September 17, Mr. Roesler will receive an honorary doctorate from the National Economics University (Hanoi), and give a speech on the topic "Opportunities of a social market economy" to the university's students.
Also within the framework of this visit, the Vietnamese-German Minister, together with Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh, will attend the Vietnam-Germany Dialogue Forum, held on September 18.
In Ho Chi Minh City, on September 19, he will meet with Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang and attend the German-Vietnamese Economic Forum, attend the opening ceremony of the German-Vietnamese Exchange School and the German-Vietnamese Technology Center.
Accompanying Mr. Philipp Roesler this time are a number of members of the federal parliament, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Cornelia Pieper and representatives of about 50 businesses. After Vietnam, Minister Roesler will visit Thailand.
"Vietnam and Thailand are two rising countries in the ASEAN economic growth area and future markets for Germany's export economy. Germany has a close partnership with these two countries and we want to continue to expand that relationship," said Minister Roesler.
Vietnam has traditionally had close relations with Germany. Since 2011, a strategic partnership has been established to further strengthen cooperation in the economic, political and cultural fields, and to carry out dialogue on the rule of law. In 2011, bilateral trade increased by 28% to 5.7 billion Euros. Both countries have impressive economic growth rates. For both Vietnam and Thailand, Germany is the most important trading partner in the EU.
Mr. Roesler was born in 1973 in Vietnam and was adopted by a German couple when he was 9 months old. He was a cardiothoracic surgeon. Before becoming the Minister of Economics and Technology and Vice Chancellor of Germany, Mr. Roesler was the Minister of Health. The youngest chairman in the history of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) visited his homeland Vietnam in 2006.
