Responding to the press about the view of National Assembly delegate Truong Trong Nghia proposing that the National Assembly establish a temporary committee to investigate the Formosa case, Mr. Tran Hong Ha said: "I welcome it, because if there is the participation of the National Assembly, it is even more necessary."

Explaining this agreement, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment said: “I think the Government will welcome this participation. Because the National Assembly's supervision is direct supervision.”

According to him, the National Assembly is the supreme supervisory body, making legal decisions on major policies. Therefore, the National Assembly's participation in supervising and handling issues related to Formosa is completely appropriate.

Mr. Tran Hong Ha also said that establishing a temporary committee on Formosa is just one way. “We need to see if it is really necessary or not. Or the current National Assembly committees are still capable of doing this. That needs to be considered. And if the National Assembly finds it necessary, it should be established,” said Minister Tran Hong Ha.

Immediately afterwards, National Assembly Deputy Truong Trong Nghia expressed his welcome and said that many other National Assembly Deputy would also support and participate in the monitoring process of the Formosa incident.

Với quy mô của mình, Formosa có thể phải chi đến 2-3 tỷ USD cho khâu xử lý chất thải
With its scale, Formosa may have to spend up to 2-3 billion USD on waste treatment.

Regarding the establishment of a temporary committee to investigate Formosa, on the morning of July 21, Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc - General Secretary of the National Assembly, Head of the National Assembly Office said that National Assembly Deputy Truong Trong Nghia had only discussed with the press and had not made a direct request.

“The establishment of a temporary committee is allowed by law. However, it must follow legal procedures and there must be a proposal,” said Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc.

On the afternoon of July 20, speaking to the press on the sidelines of the National Assembly, delegate Truong Trong Nghia proposed establishing a temporary committee to investigate the Formosa case.

Mr. Nghia said: I support the idea of establishing a temporary committee to review and investigate outstanding environmental issues. First, focus on the Formosa case. Then, similar projects.

The Formosa problem is not just today’s issue but also for the next 70 years. The project is for 70 years but even in the early stages, many violations have appeared, showing disregard for Vietnamese law and the rights of the Vietnamese people.

Establishing a temporary committee to handle an issue is something the National Assembly has never done before, and according to delegate Truong Trong Nghia: “We must ask again why the law allows the National Assembly to establish a temporary committee to consider outstanding cases that we have never done before? I think that when there is a serious issue, it must be done.”
