Father-in-law and son-in-law "hold" a hundred billion gambling ring

Nam Dinh Provincial Police confirmed on February 6 that the unit, with the coordination of the Ministry of Public Security's professional force, had just "exposed" a football betting ring via the Internet, with transaction amounts of up to hundreds of billions of VND.

According to the investigation agency, this gambling ring was led by Tran Khac Ninh (with 3 previous convictions), residing in Nam Dinh. Around mid-2015, Ninh and his accomplices' criminal activities were discovered by the Criminal Police Department of Nam Dinh Province, from the signs of some subjects organizing gambling in the form of football betting over the Internet with extremely large amounts of money.

Participating in this betting line are many criminals, operating in a "gangster" style and having extremely sophisticated methods of dealing with the police.

Some of the main subjects in the case

After a long period of investigation, on the evening of January 10, 2016, the police caught Pham Van Son, 51 years old, residing on Van Cao Street, Nang Tinh Ward, Nam Dinh City, in the act of betting on football online. Through investigation, Son confessed to betting through Tran Khac Ninh.

Based on Son's testimony and the collected investigation documents, the Nam Dinh Provincial Police Department issued an arrest warrant and conducted an emergency search of Tran Khac Ninh and 6 other people involved in the gambling ring. Among them were Tran The Cuong (Tran Khac Ninh's son-in-law), Doan Xuan Minh, Tran Xuan Trong, Mai Hong Dan, Pham Thanh Tung and Nguyen Tien Thanh, residing in Nam Hong Commune, Nam Truc District.

During the arrest and search of the suspects, the police seized many objects and documents related to online football betting activities and over 1.1 billion VND. The investigation agency initially determined that Tran Khac Ninh was the leader of the gambling ring and assigned the football betting account to his son-in-law Tran The Cuong to manage.

Evidence of the case

Mai Hong Dan was hired by Ninh to pay the gamblers for their winnings and losses. Doan Xuan Minh, Tran Xuan Trong, Pham Thanh Tung and Nguyen Tien Thanh were the ones who bought Ninh's football page to gamble.

Through data mining on the total account of this betting line, from September 13, 2014 until the time of exposure, this line had participated in betting with a total bet amount of more than 8.2 million USD (calculated in online money), converted into real money, equivalent to about 200 billion VND, not including the amount of money the gamblers won. The case is being further investigated and expanded.
