According to the teachers in the school, at that time, when the class had not yet started, they suddenly heard a loud bang from behind the school administration building. When the teachers ran out, they saw 3 students lying motionless and bleeding. Among them, two died on the spot: Nguyen Tien Phi (2004), residing in Hamlet 6, Dien Thap Commune, and Truong Tien Manh (born 2004), residing in Hamlet 8, Dien Thap Commune, Dien Chau District. Ngo Sy Hoang (born 2004), residing in Hamlet 7, Dien Thap Commune, was injured and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment immediately after.

According to many teachers, it is not yet clear whether the cause of the incident was due to the water tank falling over or the children playing around and climbing on top of it. The cause is currently being investigated by the police.
