The film “Three Windows and a Hanging” by Kosovo director Isa Qosja is the young Balkan nation’s first entry at the 87th Academy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Malta is represented by Rebecca Cremona's "Simshar"; Mauritania by Abderrahmane Sissako by "Timbuktu"; and Panama has submitted Abner Benaim's "Invasion".

The number of films submitted for the Oscars this year is the largest ever, surpassing last year's 76. The deadline for submissions is October 1.

Each country can only submit one film, and it must be shown in domestic cinemas between October 1, 2013 and September 30 of this year.

The foreign language film nominations will be narrowed down to nine films a week before the full Oscar nominations are announced, scheduled for January 15, 2015.

This is considered the pinnacle of Hollywood's annual awards season.

The Academy Awards, or Oscars, are televised live in more than 225 countries around the world.
