In the bronze medal match, Italy beat Hungary 3-1.

Russia seemed to be defeated when they lost the first two sets with the scores of 19-25 and 20-25, but the boys from the land of the White Birch made a spectacular comeback with 3 consecutive wins after that (29-27, 25-22, 15-9) to win the final set in a dramatic way 3-2. In the final set, Russia even won by 6 points (15-9) to complete an extraordinary victory.

The key to Russia's victory was Dmitriy Muserskiy – who left Brazil in the dark with his effective blocking and scoring.

Thus, since winning the Olympic title on home soil in 1980, Russia's men's volleyball team has now won a gold medal. Meanwhile, Brazil's dream of winning both the men's and women's double gold medals has been shattered.
