Niger has issued a notice calling on people on islands in Lake Chad to evacuate due to concerns about the risk of attacks by Nigerian militants Boko Haram in the area.

The announcement follows a deadly Boko Haram attack on Karamga Island last weekend that left at least 74 soldiers and civilians dead.

Karamga Island was attacked by Boko Haram once in February. It is strategically located amid swamps and a maze of waterways on the border between Niger, Chad, Nigeria and Cameroon.

Boko Haram attacks continue despite fierce military campaigns by four regional countries against the militant group in northern Nigeria. These campaigns have rescued hundreds of women and children kidnapped and held captive by Boko Haram in the Sambisa Forest, one of the group’s strongholds.
