Photo of Vietnamese fishermen wins first prize in US photography
The photo taken by photographer Pham Ty of two women sewing nets in Vinh Hy Bay, Ninh Thuan, won the Grand Prize at the Smithsonian magazine (USA) photography awards.
The Smithsonian Photography Awards are presented by the magazine and website of the same name. This magazine specializes in science, history, art, popular culture and innovation.
This year’s competition had more than 26,000 entries from 93 countries around the world. The categories were Natural World, Travel, People, The American Experience, Transformative Images, and Moving Objects. Photographer Pham Ty’s photo won the Grand Prize for all categories, while the photo was in the People category.
Four other photos from Vietnamese photographers made it to the final round of this year’s contest, including Ly Hoang Long, Hoang The Nhiem, Tran Viet Phuong and Nguyen Trang. Here are the Vietnamese photos from the contest:

Travel category finalist: Hoang The Nhiem captured a woman harvesting water lilies in Chau Doc, Mekong Delta in October 2014, using a Sony Ilce-7R. During the flood season, wild water lilies grow everywhere in the flooded rice fields. Water lilies have become a special dish for the people of this region, often used in salads or cooked in fish soup. |
