(Baonghean.vn) - On August 25, the European Union (EU) announced that Serbia and Kosovo had reached agreements in many important areas, creating a "turning point" towards normalizing relations between the two sides since Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008.

GrandmaFederica Mogherin, EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, announced a "landmark" agreement in relations between Serbia and Kosovo

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who is mediating the talks, said Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and his Kosovo counterpart Isa Mustafa signed agreements covering areas such as energy and telecommunications. "Today's agreement is a milestone in the process of normalizing relations between the two countries. Solutions like this bring real benefits to the people and at the same time make progress for both sides on the path to EU membership," said former Italian foreign minister Mogherini.

The deal comes two days before a summit of Western Balkans and Mogherini leaders, amid concerns that a massive influx of migrants is flooding through the region and affecting Russia.

Relations between Serbia and Kosovo became tense after Kosovo unilaterally declared independence and seceded from Serbia in 2008. In 2013, Kosovo and Serbia signed an agreement on the normalization of relations between the two sides, paving the way for Serbia to begin EU accession negotiations a year later.
