The Jealous Husband's Freaky Morning

Searching for his wife's "man in the dark", Hai locked the door, held a knife and questioned her, despite his father's advice outside.

At the age of 19, Nguyen Thi Huong married Vuong Van Hai (Thach That district, Hanoi). Having two handsome sons made her "proud" but due to difficult economic circumstances, Hai's married life was always in conflict. Happiness fell into a deadlock when he suspected his wife had a lover and did not care for the family.

Despite his wife's excuses, Hai always had the intention of "catching her red-handed". Despite the conflict, Hai still contributed and borrowed money for his wife to go to Malaysia to work as an export laborer. In 2014, after two years of working, Ms. Huong sent home 100 million VND for Hai to take care of the family and pay off part of the debt.

When his wife did not continue to send money, Hai inquired through relatives who were working in Malaysia and became increasingly suspicious that his wife had sent money to another man. When his wife returned home without bringing any money, Hai became even more "hated".

During the first days of their reunion, Hai noticed that his wife was cold and indifferent to her husband and children, and often texted on the phone. When he asked who she was texting but got no answer, Hai always tried to find a way to cause trouble.

On the morning of January 12, Hai saw his wife in the kitchen. He suspected that she was avoiding her husband to text her lover, so he followed her to question her. While arguing, Hai locked the door, grabbed a knife and stabbed Huong many times despite his wife's pleas. Hai's father heard her cries for help and ran to the locked door, unable to enter the house. He stood outside and shouted at his son to stop, but to no avail. Huong died in a closed room next to her violent husband.

Appearing in court on August 21, Hai said he did not know who his wife's "man" in the dark was, and had no concrete evidence but still had doubts. Hai said he was repressed, "frustrated and unable to control himself."

The judge asked: "What did Ms. Huong do to make the defendant angry? She came back from working abroad and has raised the children with the defendant, so why are you still suspicious and blindly jealous?" Hai was silent, bowing his head.

While their father stood in the dock, the two boys wandered outside the courtroom hallway. Because they were so young, the two brothers were not allowed into the courtroom, only occasionally glancing through the door. The 14-year-old eldest boy confided that although his father had committed a serious crime against his mother, he "still loved him."

Present in court, Hai's father said that since his daughter-in-law passed away and his son got into trouble with the law, his two grandchildren have been living with him. However, in the long run, he is not sure if he will have enough strength and finances to take care of them.

At the end of the trial that day, it was determined that Hai's particularly serious actions should have resulted in his permanent removal from society, but the defendant still had two young children, so the court sentenced him to life in prison for murder.
