Scientists say they have found signs of genetic mutations in three generations of butterflies in the area near the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

According to the above study, about 12% of blue butterfly species have had changes in their wings and eyes.

Joji Otaki, an assistant professor at the University of Ryukyu in Okinawa, said he had captured many types of insects near the Fukushima nuclear disaster area and 18% of them had similar problems.

Researchers also collected about 240 butterflies in Fukushima last September, six months after the disaster. According to Mr. Otaki, the abnormality rate was recorded at 52%.

Mr. Otakia said the high radiation levels in the insects could stem from the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima power plant affecting the environment as well as being present in food.

Newly published studies are raising concerns about the impacts of the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster on humans, animals and insects in affected areas.

However, Mr. Otaki also warned that it is too early to draw conclusions. He also said that the butterflies in Fukushima cannot be used as evidence of impacts on other species, especially humans./.
