Drug trafficking sentenced to 15 years in prison

(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of September 24, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Le Van Thang (born in 1975, residing in Yen Son commune, Do Luong district) for the crime of illegal drug trafficking.

According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Nghe An province, in November 2013, Thang was contracted to do a construction project in Laos. On May 17, 2014, Thang watched gambling and saw some people buying drugs from a young Lao man for use. Thang had the idea of ​​buying drugs to bring back to Vietnam to sell for profit.

After that, Thang met and bought from a young Lao man a package of drugs worth 16 million Lao kip, equivalent to 43 million VND. On the way back to Vietnam, Thang bought 3 plastic bags, divided the package of drugs into 3 packages, then took a bus back to Vietnam, and rented a hotel in Vinh City to stay.

At about 8:30 a.m. on May 20, 2014, a Vinh City police task force inspected the hotel where Le Van Thang was staying and discovered a black cloth bag containing 3 white crystallized plastic bags. Continuing to search Thang's house in Do Luong, the police seized 2 more small scales. The results of the examination showed that the 3 plastic bags contained a white crystallized substance that was synthetic drugs weighing 249.080 grams.

At the trial, Thang confessed to all his actions. Previously, in 2006 and 2010, Thang was sentenced by the Yen Thanh District People's Court to a total of 13 months in prison, suspended, for gambling. On March 28, 2013, Thang was sentenced by the Yen Thanh District People's Court to 9 months in prison, suspended, for gambling, but the sentence has not yet been served.

Applying point e, clause 3, article 149 of the Penal Code, the panel sentenced defendant Le Van Thang to 15 years in prison. In total, Thang must serve 15 years and 9 months in prison for both sentences.
