Daytime sleepiness warns of serious illness
Daytime sleepiness is a sign of amyloid protein accumulation in the brain that "suffocates" nerve cells, making it susceptible to Alzheimer's disease.

Daytime sleepiness not only shows that you are not resting well, but also warns of the risk of Alzheimer's disease.Healthquoting research from the Mayo Clinic (USA) in the newspaperJAMA Neurology.
To make the above statement, the group of authors studied 283 volunteers over 70 years old who did not have dementia. After seven years, scientists found that people who often felt sleepy during the day had accumulated a lot of amyloid, a protein that appears in Alzheimer's disease and causes nerve cells to be "suffocated". Previously, many biological studies have shown that the brain cleans amyloid during sleep.
While the study did not conclude that poor sleep causes amyloid buildup and leads to Alzheimer's, it did emphasize the importance of sleep in keeping the brain healthy.
"I hope the community will understand that good sleep habits are important for a healthy brain because they prevent the accumulation of amyloid, one of the main proteins underlying Alzheimer's disease," said Prashanthi Vemuri, associate professor of radiology and the lead author of the study.
