The Lernstift Pen is capable of creating vibrations to alert the user that their writing is now incorrect in spelling, grammar, and needs to be corrected.

One obvious thing when using a regular pen is that you cannot know whether the words you write are spelled correctly or not. However, with the new electronic pen called Lernstift, this "obsession" will probably no longer exist. Invented by two Germans, Falk Wolsky and Daniel Kaesmacher, the Lernstift pen has the ability to create vibrations to notify the user that their writing is currently incorrect in terms of spelling, grammar and needs to be corrected. The function of Lernstift shows that it is very useful for foreign language learners.

Lernstift has fully integrated handwriting recognition software and technology inside, so it does not need to be connected to a computer to recognize spelling errors like other optical sensor pens. Currently, Lernstift can recognize German and English grammar and spelling.

According to the two inventors, the pen has two main functions, a spelling mode to detect spelling errors, and a grammar mode, which will point out grammatical errors in a sentence, or even show you which way to write is easier to read and understand. Users can also choose from pencil, fountain pen, and ballpoint pen styles. Lernstift uses an embedded Linux system and a circuit board that contains motion sensors, a processor, memory, Wi-Fi, and oval vibration modules to match the curvature of the pen. The motion sensor will combine a gyroscope and an accelerometer, and will use three different methods to process data from handwriting.

The inventors hope to start production of 20 to 100 units in August or September. They are also seeking a Kickstarter target of $181,476 to fund mass production by the end of the year. The Lernstift is expected to retail for around $150.
