So far, there have been five deaths due to viral encephalitis, in Gia Lai (2 cases); Dien Bien (1 case); Bac Lieu (1 case) and Hanoi (1 case).

According to statistics from the Department of Preventive Medicine, compared to the same period in 2013, the number of cases this year decreased by 14%, and deaths decreased by 54%. The Northern region accounted for 65% of cases, the Central region 12%, the South 17% and the Central Highlands 4.4%.

The provinces and cities with the highest number of infections are Ho Chi Minh City, followed by Hanoi, Quang Ngai, Thai Binh...

According to the report of the National Children's Hospital, by June 30, the hospital had treated 129 cases of viral encephalitis (accounting for 40% of the total number of viral encephalitis patients nationwide), with 1 death.

Investigation results show that the number of cases is scattered, with no concentrated outbreaks. The cases are mainly in children under 15 years old (84%), of which children under 1 year old account for 15%.

Currently, there is no specific treatment for viral encephalitis and only Japanese encephalitis has a vaccine to prevent the disease.

The Department of Preventive Medicine requires medical units to effectively monitor and detect early cases of the disease, promptly localize and thoroughly handle outbreaks; organize emergency care and treatment of patients to limit sequelae and deaths, and prevent cross-infection in treatment facilities.

People need to take preventive measures such as maintaining good environmental hygiene, keeping their homes clean, cleaning livestock barns to limit mosquito breeding sites, moving livestock barns away from homes, and eliminating mosquito larvae nests.

People should use mosquito nets when sleeping and regularly use mosquito repellents in their homes. Parents should not let children play near livestock pens, especially at dusk, to prevent mosquito bites.

For intestinal viruses, diseases transmitted through the digestive tract and direct contact, people need to practice good personal hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap, ensure food safety, and practice hygiene by eating cooked food and drinking boiled water.

For strains of viruses that cause respiratory diseases, people need to isolate sick people well, limit direct contact with sick people, and use protective measures such as wearing masks when caring for sick people./.

Viral encephalitis is a dangerous disease caused by many types of viruses, of which Japanese encephalitis virus is one of the causative agents.

The main symptom of the disease is high fever and symptoms related to damage to the central nervous system. Children under 15 years of age are at high risk of contracting the disease.

The disease occurs year round but the epidemic season is in the summer months and peaks in June, July and August.
