The first fisherman to discover "Mr. Nam Hai" was Mr. Nguyen Van Tho (residing in Ward 13, Lien Huong town) - owner of the BTH ship while fishing offshore in Lien Huong sea area, about 7 nautical miles from shore.

“On September 14, while fishing far from shore, I discovered a huge fish floating on the water like a submarine, but I didn’t know what kind of fish it was. The fish’s body was scratched in many places. A huge wave suddenly hit the side of the boat, and the huge fish got tangled in the anchor rope, scaring me because the fish was so big beyond my imagination. Seeing that, I cut the anchor rope, started the engine and ran to shore,” said Mr. Tho.

A crane was needed to lift the whale and bring it ashore for burial.

When he learned that the giant fish was actually a whale that fishermen often called Mr. Nam Hai and was dead and drifting to shore, Mr. Tho quickly mobilized other ships to go out to sea to help rescue Mr. Nam Hai to shore to bury him according to the fishermen's worship rituals.

It was not until dusk on September 16 that the whale was brought ashore.

“Because the giant fish was so heavy, estimated at 6-7 tons, the local authorities had to call in a sand excavator to bring the body ashore and to the burial site,” said Mr. Huynh Em, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Lien Huong town.

That same evening, the town's Nam Hai Ong Lang Management Board conducted traditional rituals, then buried the fish's body near the above area, far from residential areas to ensure environmental hygiene.

According to fishermen in Ward 13, this is the third time Mr. Nam Hai has drifted at Lien Huong estuary, but this is the first time he has seen a whale.
