(Baonghean.vn) - Green eggplant farmers in Yen Thanh district are currently in the main harvest season, with very high yields, but eggplant growers are unhappy because the selling price has dropped dramatically.

Green eggplant yield is about 1.8 - 2 tons/sao, but the price has dropped so people are not interested in harvesting.

This spring, Tay Thanh mountainous commune, Yen Thanh district expanded the area of ​​green eggplant to 30 hectares. If in previous years, at this time, almost all eggplant fields were bustling with people picking and buying right at the field, this year people were not very interested in harvesting, many areas were left alone by farmers, leaving the eggplants to wilt and the fruit to ripen.

Ms. Le Thi Muoi, Tien Quang hamlet sadly said: My family does not have any colored land but has a large garden land, so for the past 10 years we have been growing green eggplant. Every year, the selling price is from 7-8 thousand VND/kg, peaking last year when it was up to 15 thousand VND/kg, with more than 3 sao, my family and the villagers earned more than 20 million VND. But this year, the price has dropped dramatically, selling at the field is only about 2 thousand VND/kg, not worth the effort of harvesting.

Yen Thanh green eggplant is characterized by its dark green color, medium size, crunchy, sweet fruit, so it is very suitable for preparing dishes.

Tay Thanh eggplant is characterized by its dark green color, medium-sized, crispy, sweet fruit, and is favored by customers, so the area for growing eggplant is constantly increasing, concentrated in the hamlets of Thanh Son, Tien Quang, An Quang... According to the selling price of previous years, each sao of eggplant is worth at least 7 - 8 million VND. This year, although the area has expanded, the eggplant yield is high, the whole commune has reached about 1,200 tons, but it has fallen into a situation of good harvest and low price, making people not very interested in harvesting.

Ms. Le Thi Muoi, Tien Quang hamlet said: Every year, the selling price is from 7 - 8 thousand VND/kg, the peak like last year was up to 15 thousand VND/kg, then with more than 3 sao, each sao earns 7 - 8 million VND, my family earns nearly 50 million VND. But this year, the price has dropped so miserably, her family does not want to harvest, whoever comes to ask, they give, leaving the eggplant to spoil.

According to Mr. Tran Van Tai - Head of Hamlet 5, Dai Thanh Commune, green eggplant has outstanding advantages compared to other crops, it is an easy-to-grow crop, quite drought-resistant, and the care and fertilization process is not too expensive, about more than 1 million VND/sao for seeds, fertilizers...: Long harvest time, two main crops and can be cared for to harvest off-season. The average eggplant yield is from 1.2 to 1.5 tons/sao. Therefore, the whole Dai Thanh commune grows more than 5 hectares of eggplant, of which Hamlet 5 accounts for 3.5 hectares.

Last year, when the price was good, people earned nearly 10 million VND/sao, it seemed like every household grew eggplant. This year, the price is low, so people harvested and sold it to have money to spend, then switched to growing morning glory, which is now very popular in the market.

Yen Thanh's green eggplant is currently priced at only 2 - 3 thousand VND/kg, while last year the selling price at the field was 10 - 15 thousand VND/kg.

In Tien Thanh commune, implementing the project of converting crop structure, increasing value per unit area, for over 5 years, eggplant has been considered the main crop, bringing high economic value. However, fluctuations in market prices have made farmers not very interested, in the future they will switch to raising livestock or intensively cultivating other crops.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Dai - Chairman of Tien Thanh Commune People's Committee shared: Green eggplant is a very productive crop, farmers do not have to spend time selling it, but traders come to the fields to buy it. However, this year the price is too low, so eggplant growers will lose their crop.

Mr. Tran Van Tai - Head of Hamlet 5, Dai Thanh Commune said: The hamlet has 3.5 hectares of land for growing eggplant. Last year, the price was good, the eggplant reached nearly 10 million VND/sao, so it seemed like every household planted eggplant. This year, the price is low, so people harvest and sell to have money to spend, then switch to growing Thien Ly flowers.

In the whole Yen Thanh district, there are currently more than 60 hectares of agricultural land converted by farmers to grow green eggplant, concentrated in the communes of Tay Thanh; Tien Thanh; Quang Thanh; Dai Thanh... Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Head of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: Every year, Yen Thanh district has many support mechanisms for the conversion of crop structure, especially in the highland communes, to increase economic efficiency and increase income value per unit area for farmers.

Eggplant is chosen by many localities and has brought high economic efficiency for many years. However, localities have not created connections, where to find products, so prices are unstable.
