The defendants hope to enjoy leniency from the law.
(Baonghean.vn) -As reported, continuing yesterday's trial, this morning (January 9), Nghe An Provincial People's Court continued to hold a public first-instance trial of the criminal case against 14 defendants for the crime of "activities aimed at overthrowing the people's government" under Clauses 1 and 2 - Article 79 - Penal Code of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The prosecutor presented evidence and proof of the defendants' criminal acts.
In the debate, the defense lawyers for the defendants presented arguments with the views and sentences proposed by the Procuracy; the defendants also had additional opinions and argued with the indictment and the indictment. The People's Procuracy also presented evidence and proof in response to the arguments of the lawyers and the defendants. The representative of the Procuracy once again affirmed: based on the investigation results and the defendants' testimonies at the trial, there was sufficient evidence to determine that the defendants in the case were indoctrinated by some leaders and key members of the "Viet Tan" organization and participated in this reactionary organization with the purpose of eliminating the leadership role of the Communist Party of Vietnam and overthrowing the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The organized crimes and acts of assisting reactionary forces by the defendants are very dangerous, infringing on national security and going against the interests of the nation.
The defendants have additional comments and arguments against the indictment.
At the end of the debate, the defendants were given the final say by the jury. Most of the defendants expressed remorse for their lack of knowledge, which led to them being lured and enticed into committing crimes by the reactionary organization "Viet Tan", committing wrongdoings against the country and the people, and hoped to receive leniency from the law.
Relatives' sadness when hearing the defendants say their last words in court.
This afternoon, the Trial Panel continued its deliberations and sentencing.
