Future generations may no longer be able to swim on coral reefs or eat certain seafood as the world's oceans are heading towards a "phase of extinction" due to human impacts of overfishing and climate change, scientists have warned.

A study from an international panel of marine experts says conditions in the world's seas are worse than predicted.

At a conference at Oxford University, UK, scientists warned that entire ecosystems, such as coral reefs, could be lost in just one generation.

Large fish stocks have been reduced, leading to the risk of increased food prices and even famine in some parts of the world.

Experts say that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has pushed up ocean temperatures, causing algae to grow and they have reduced oxygen levels and increased acidity in the water.

These conditions are very similar to the great extinctions that have occurred previously in Earth's history.

Experts are calling for urgent measures to cut carbon emissions, reduce fishing, close unsustainable fishing operations, create marine protected areas and reduce pollution.
