Covid-19 symptoms can last forever

Many patients still feel tired, have difficulty breathing, chest pain, and poor memory after testing negative for SARS-CoV-2.

Soon after the Covid-19 pandemic began, doctors made a troubling discovery: Some patients tested negative after a short period of treatment, but they didn’t feel better. This syndrome became known as “long Covid.”

Scientists and patient support groups are working together to find the cause of this condition in order to develop effective treatments. Here are some of the symptoms of long Covid syndrome:

Tired

This condition is common in patients who have just recovered. However, some people report experiencing varying degrees of fatigue for months. As a result, they have difficulty performing daily tasks.

It is the most common manifestation of long Covid syndrome that makes the patient exhausted and weak even with just a little effort.

Brain fog

Confusion or an inability to concentrate are symptoms of brain fog. Up to 30% of people who have had Covid-19 have neurological or psychiatric symptoms, according to estimates from the US National Institutes of Health. Researchers aren’t exactly sure why.

Currently, the two leading hypotheses are that Covid-19 causes encephalitis or the SARS-CoV-2 virus reduces oxygen and blood to the brain, causing damage.

Shortness of breath

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, Covid-19 can cause scarring and other problems in the lungs. Even mild cases can cause persistent shortness of breath or shortness of breath even with mild exertion.

Chest pain

There has been some speculation that Covid-19 can cause inflammation of the heart. This condition is also linked to another type of chest pain that can last a long time. Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone.

Autonomic nervous system disorder

A disruption in the communication system between the brain and nerves has been reported in some Covid-19 patients who have tested negative. Symptoms include breathing, sleep and digestive problems; migraines; numbness in the feet and hands; shortness of breath that causes anxiety; and increased heart rate.

Cardiovascular problems

Covid-19 has been linked to heart problems in some people, including myocarditis, which can occur in people with mild cases of Covid-19 and no underlying health conditions.

A study has found that 60% of people who recovered from Covid-19 had signs of heart inflammation, leading to common symptoms of shortness of breath, palpitations and a rapid heartbeat.

Postural tachycardia

Feeling dizzy, faint, or having a rapid heartbeat when going from sitting to standing is called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Doctors are not sure why people who have recovered from Covid-19 develop the above syndrome, but this phenomenon is not new.

Patients may develop postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome after viral illnesses, severe infections, pregnancy, and trauma such as head injury.
