According to a VNA correspondent in Cuba, on July 26, in the heroic city of Santiago de Cuba, a solemn rally took place to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, also known as the Cuban Armed Uprising Day (July 26), which started the revolutionary struggle for national independence in this Caribbean island nation.

According to a VNA correspondent in Cuba, on July 26, in the heroic city of Santiago de Cuba, a solemn rally took place to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, also known as the Cuban Armed Uprising Day (July 26), which started the revolutionary struggle for national independence in this Caribbean island nation.

Attending the ceremony were President Raul Castro, leaders of the Cuban Party and State, the Presidents of Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Uruguay, heads of government of several Caribbean countries and more than ten thousand local people representing the people of the whole country.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Raul Castro reviewed the armed struggle of the generation of Cuban patriotic youth led by Leader Fidel Castro since the unsuccessful attack on July 26, 1953, which marked a historic turning point and less than 6 years later, the continuous growth of the revolutionary movement together with the support of the people led Cuba to officially gain independence and freedom on January 1, 1959.

President Raul Castro said that after 60 years, the Cuban revolution is still a revolution of the youth generation, and affirmed that the veteran revolutionary generation that created a turning point in the liberation struggle is gradually transferring responsibility to the next generations with absolute serenity and trust.

The Cuban leader also mentioned the solid integration process in the spirit of solidarity and mutual assistance among Latin American and Caribbean countries, despite the divisive intentions of hostile forces.

Mr. Raul Castro also emphasized that the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean have always extended their arms to unite in the spirit of mutual respect and have given birth to a series of association and integration organizations such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). In addition, this cooperation has also created a process of socio-political change in a series of countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua.

On this occasion, leaders of countries in the region attending the ceremony also expressed their admiration for the Cuban people's steadfast will in the struggle for national independence and development over the past six decades, despite plots to sabotage and overthrow the revolution by hostile forces.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the event that took place in the heroic city of Santiago de Cuba 60 years ago encouraged and strengthened confidence in the process of change taking place in Latin America today.

Bolivarian President Evo Morales highlighted the solidarity of the Cuban people when he recalled the words of Leader Fidel Castro: “We must share the little we have, not the things we have in excess.”

Meanwhile, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega affirmed that Cuba is the most eloquent proof that freedom, independence, sovereignty, justice and the right to live in peace of peoples can be protected and maintained when a revolution with its ideals and principles is supported by the entire nation.

During these days, many cultural activities and festivals have been held in all provinces and cities of Cuba to celebrate this important event of the people of this Caribbean island nation./.
