With a car that has a remote control and a mechanical key to start the car, when the remote control runs out of battery, of course you have to open the door with the mechanical key to find a way to handle the situation. At this time, the alarm system will be activated, the siren will sound and the emergency lights will flash continuously, and the engine will not be able to start.
In this situation, just put the key in the ignition, let the lights flash and the horn sound, turn it to the ON position, leave it for 3 minutes then turn it to the "Start" position, the car will start, the lights and horn will stop working and you can drive normally.
2. Vehicles using the first generation Smart key system
In the Vietnamese market, the Smart key system is used for 3 car models: Hyundai I30, Santafe <2010 and Veracruz. This is a system with a knob on the electric lock similar to the type using a mechanical key and without a Start/stop button.
In the situation as mentioned above, insert the key into the knob, press lightly and start the engine normally.

With these cars, there will be a slot to plug in the remote control to start the car in an emergency. Depending on the car, this slot can be located right under the Start/Stop button, near the ashtray under the air conditioning control panel or in the center armrest compartment, between the two front seats.
To start the car, insert the remote control into this slot, press it lightly to lock it in place, then press the Start/Stop button as usual. Note that this slot is for emergency use and for the manufacturer to install a new key, not to charge the remote control battery as many people mistakenly believe.
4. Vehicles using third generation Smart key system
With this type of car, the slot for the remote control has been removed. To start the car in an emergency, just use the non-key end of the remote control to press the Start/stop button and the car can run normally.
When does a smart key need a battery replacement?
Most manufacturers recommend that under normal use, the key's battery can last for 2-3 years. However, due to weather conditions, frequency of use, or frequent interference, the battery life is reduced.
Drivers should proactively change the battery every year or so, or when they notice that the key is unstable, has difficulty receiving signals, or is difficult to use at long distances, they should change it.
In addition, you should proactively prepare a few more batteries of the same type to replace yourself when necessary.
