How to raise frogs in rice fields
Choose farming fields
Choose a field with a sufficient water source, convenient drainage, an area of several hundred to several thousand square meters, of which 2/3 of the area is for growing rice, the rest is intercropped with water potatoes or lotus. If the rice field and lotus pond are next to each other, they can be surrounded by a common bank, dig a protective hole 1 - 2 square meters wide, 50 - 60 meters deep, near the drainage gate and dig a protective ditch 30 cm wide, 50 cm deep around the rice field, connecting the hole with the ditch so that frogs and tadpoles have a place to live when draining the rice to dry. The bank should be built wide and high, keeping the water depth from 6 - 15 cm, should grow short-term rice, when harvesting leave the roots for the rice to sprout.
Instructions on how to raise frogs in rice fields
Before releasing the frogs, a net must be fenced. Use 2 pieces of nylon mesh sewn together, at a height of 1.5m or more, the net feet buried more than 10cm deep in the ground. The net is tied to bamboo or wooden stakes as a support, you can use oil-soaked paper, cement roofing sheets or build a brick wall (however, you need to pay attention because these materials are poorly ventilated, easy to fall, drift... when there is a storm). At the fence gates, the water supply and drainage gates need to be covered with nylon mesh, the mesh size depends on the size of the frog species being raised.
Release the frog
When the water temperature is above 18oC or 10 days after rice planting, release frogs (20g/each) into the field, with a density of 1,000 frogs/sao. The same size should be released in the same area to avoid the big ones eating the small ones. Do not release tadpoles in the field because they will be eaten by eels, insects, frogs, aquatic animals...
If the rice field has few insects, you can set up insect traps after harvesting the rice. When it is cold and there are few insects, feed the frogs with shrimp, small fish, worms, etc. The field should be kept in water 6 - 15cm deep. When it needs to be exposed to the sun, gradually drain the water so the tadpoles can retreat to a protective ditch or potato field or lotus pond.
Heat resistant
In the summer, the rice plants are still small, the fields have no shade, the temperature can reach 38 - 40oC, exceeding the adaptation level of frogs. Therefore, it is necessary to plant main-season rice or early rice, when harvesting rice, the stubble should be left evenly for the rice to grow. Next to the rice field, potatoes and lotus should be planted for frogs to hide, or straw should be used to cover a cool place on the ditch to protect the frogs.
Take care of
Rice fields for raising frogs need to adjust the appropriate planting density, improve fertilization techniques to reduce disease sources, do not need to use pesticides, frogs can still grow and develop well, do not need to dry the fields to limit tillering, frog fields need to apply more basal fertilizer, reduce or completely eliminate top dressing to improve fertilization efficiency, reduce harm to frogs.
Benefit
After raising frogs for a while, most of the insects in the field will have fewer frogs, which will reduce the risk of rice diseases, so you will need to spray less pesticides. If you have to use pesticides, choose less toxic ones or move the frogs to the potato or lotus fields to avoid poisoning for a few days. It is best not to use them.
