Nghia Dan oranges price dropped dramatically by 10,000 VND/kg
(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, the households contracted by Co Do Farm are in the orange harvest season. Although the productivity has increased, the product price has decreased a lot compared to previous years.
Co Do Farm currently has more than 120 hectares of oranges in operation, of which Team 1 is the unit with 21 hectares. Mr. Ngo Van Dong's family in Team 1 said that his family has been growing oranges for more than 10 years, but this year is the most successful year, with output increasing from 25 tons to 30 tons. The orange crop is good but consumption is difficult, the selling price has decreased from 20,000 VND/kg to 10,000 VND/kg, and many batches have no buyers even on harvest day.

Previously, Co Do was known as a farm specializing in supplying coffee and oranges, but because it was not bold enough to apply scientific and technological advances to production as well as invest in high-yield varieties, the oranges here were of poor quality, and the selling price dropped sharply compared to oranges from neighboring areas. In recent years, the farm has boldly invested in lending interest-free fertilizer to contracted households, sending technical staff to the gardens to instruct people on how to care for the trees, so the oranges of Co Do Farm have gradually gained a brand name, with beautiful, plump fruit and a rich sweet taste.
Mr. Ngo Van Dong in Team 1, Co Do Farm shared: “My family grows more than 15 sao of oranges, this year is the 9th year. In the past 2 years, thanks to applying advances as well as implementing the correct care process, the yield has been very high, but the price of oranges this year is lower than previous years”.

Not only the oranges of Co Do Farm, at the meetings with voters with the district and provincial People's Council delegates, voters of Nghia Hong commune also had many suggestions on building the Nghia Dan orange brand. Because currently, in Nghia Hong commune, there are many batches of oranges with quality, appearance and flavor not inferior to Quy Hop oranges but the selling price is only half.
Ms. Tang Thi Phuong, Hong Phu hamlet, Nghia Hong commune, said: “My family has more than 1 hectare of Xa Doai and Van Du oranges, which are considered the best in this area, but even if they get the best price, they are only over 20,000 VND/kg of grade 1 oranges; meanwhile, the average price of Quy Hop oranges is 35,000 VND/kg. The desire of Nghia Dan orange growers is to build the Nghia Dan orange brand so that the products made by the people are not forced to lower the price by traders.”

Orange growers hope to build the Nghia Dan orange brand to ensure good output. |
One of the reasons for the above situation is that in recent years, orange trees have been considered to bring high income, so people in Nghia Dan district as well as households contracted by Co Do Farm have massively destroyed rubber trees to grow oranges. Although oranges here do not have the same price as Quy Hop oranges, the economic efficiency is still higher than other crops. Currently, the Farm has also directed not to expand the area, but to focus on planting some more fruit trees such as green-skinned grapefruit, Hong Quang Tien grapefruit, and Taiwanese pear guava to diversify products.
