(Baonghean.vn) -In recent days, people in Thanh Chuong district have not stopped praising the brave action of Le Van Duoc - a 9B student at Thanh Ngoc Secondary School (residing in Ngoc Ha hamlet, Thanh Ngoc commune) who sacrificed himself to save 5 children from the mouth of the "river god" on the afternoon of June 17.
On the afternoon of June 19, we visited Le Van Duoc’s family when the neighbors and relatives of the five female students rescued by Duoc were talking about Duoc’s bravery. Although he was a senior in secondary school, Duoc looked very thin and shorter than his peers. Talking to us, Duoc still clearly remembered the moment he saved the five female students from the rushing water of the Gang River.
As usual, on the afternoon of June 17, a group of children took their buffaloes to graze along the Gang River, which flows through Thanh Ngoc Commune. In the late afternoon, a group of female students waded through the shallow water to the other side of the river to bring the buffaloes home. However, after herding the buffaloes across the river, the group of female students turned back to catch some mussels to improve their meal, but they encountered a swamp with strong currents. In the midst of the rushing water, all five children could only hug each other, panicking and calling for help. Because the river section where they encountered the accident was deserted, no one knew to come to their rescue.
Hearing the desperate cries for help from his friends in the river, Le Van Duoc, who was nearby, did not hesitate to jump into the water to save them. Because he knew how to swim well, Duoc quickly saved Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhi (12 years old) and Nguyen Thi Trang (13 years old) - two children who were starting to drown in the river. After bringing Nhi and Trang to shore safely, Duoc continued to jump into the river to pull the remaining three children who were struggling, including Nguyen Thi Tu (10 years old), Trinh Thi Hau (13 years old) and Nguyen Thi Phuong (13 years old).
When they reached the shore, Nhi and Trang showed signs of drowning and difficulty breathing due to drinking too much water. Seeing this, Duoc was smart and calm and took turns performing first aid on the two children. “I was taught first aid for drowning by my father and teacher at school, so I knew and followed it. When my friends woke up, I called everyone to come rescue them and take them home,” Duoc recalled.
Le Van Duoc and 5 female students were rescued on the afternoon of June 17 at Gang River (Thanh Ngoc Commune, Thanh Chuong District).
Two days after the incident, the five children who were rescued were still quite panicked. Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhi (12 years old, 6A grade student, Thanh Ngoc Secondary School) recounted: “Because we all didn’t know how to swim, when we crossed the river to bring the buffalo home, we chose shallow water to wade across for safety. On the way back, we encountered deep water and got into trouble. At that time, I could only hold on to the other children. A moment later, I felt someone from behind push me to the shore.”
Sitting next to Nhi, Nguyen Thi Trang (13 years old) is still haunted by the moment she escaped from the mouth of the "river god". "When I fell into deep water, I drank a lot of water. When Duoc saved me, he gave me first aid by shaking me to get the water out. If Duoc hadn't jumped into the river to save me, we would have all died," Trang confided.
Hearing the news of Duoc’s bravery in saving people, the people of Ngoc Ha village were both impressed and “shuddered”, not knowing what would have happened if Duoc had not been quick-witted and brave. Mr. Nguyen Doan Phu - father of Nguyen Thi Tu, who was saved by Duoc, emotionally shared: “If it were a little later, I would have died.Iwill no longer liveMy family is extremely grateful for your kind gesture.picture of youSatisfiedsave my child.”At home, Duoc is often called by the familiar name "Teo", but since hearing the story of Duoc's bravery and intelligence in saving people, many people in Ngoc Ha village have "awarded" him the title "Village Hero".
Representatives of Thanh Chuong District Youth Union visited and encouraged Le Van Duoc's brave spirit of saving people.
From ancient times to the present, the Gang River has been gentle in the dry season but also becomes fierce in the rainy season. The riverbed is only about 50m wide but there have been many drowning incidents, most of whom are students. Mr. Nguyen Manh Quy - head of Ngoc Ha hamlet said: "When summer comes, we are most worried about students on summer vacation herding buffaloes and bathing in the river, which poses many risks of drowning because their parents do not pay attention." After the incident of Duoc saving 5 children from drowning, parents here have also paid more attention to ensuring a safe environment for their children.
It is known that Duoc is the eldest son in a family of 3 brothers, the family life is quite difficult when completely dependent on agriculture. Not only is he a good son, but Duoc is also a good student, loved by teachers and friends. Although life in the countryside is still lacking, Duoc's parents both teach their children to swim, in case of bad situations. Ms. Le Thi Luong (43 years old) - Duoc's mother confided: "Because the family lives near rivers, lakes, and streams, since childhood, the children in the family have been taught by their father to swim and how to save drowning people as well as how to breathe and give first aid to drowning people. Duoc is a very good swimmer and must have been very calm to be able to save his friend in the recent drowning incident."
When we asked him why he didn't call an adult for help when he was saving people in the river, which could have been life-threatening, Duoc honestly said: "After I finished bathing, I went ashore and was about to leave when I heard my friends calling for help in the river. At that time, I thought about how to save my friends to shore safely without any hesitation because there was no other way, and there was no one else nearby."
Recently, the story of male student Nguyen Van Nam - a 12T7 student at Do Luong I High School (residing in Trung Son commune, Do Luong district, Nghe An) who bravely sacrificed himself to save 5 children in Lam river touched millions of hearts, and also left a deep impression on Duoc. "At school, in class, teachers told us a lot about Nam's story. He
