Wrongly placed markers on Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir, causing flooding of houses and schools
(Baonghean) -While living peacefully, 30 households in Xop Chao village, Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong district (Nghe An) were suddenly flooded by the Ban Ve Hydropower reservoir, flooding their houses and school.
Comrade Nguyen Ho Canh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district, said: Xop Chao village, Luong Minh commune - Tuong Duong has 79 households of the Kho Mu ethnic group. The sudden rise of the reservoir water caused 30 households, a primary school and a kindergarten to be flooded. The cause of the flooding was due to the wrong placement of markers. The water level at the elevation was 200.5 m but at the reservoir it only reached 191 m, causing flooding in a corner of Xop Chao village.
Teacher Le Van Hai - Principal of Luong Minh Primary School is worried: Luong Minh Primary School branch has 4 classes, 18 kindergarten students. On August 15, the school officially started teaching, but now the school is flooded, so where will the children study?

On the morning of August 12, 2011, Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee - Comrade Huynh Thanh Dien directed the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district to urgently mobilize forces to help people dismantle their houses to move to a safe place and survey a new location to resettle 79 households. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Management Board of Hydropower Plant II to coordinate with the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district to provide construction funding for Xop Chao village - Luong Minh commune.
Representatives of the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district and the Management Board of Hydropower Plant II also had a quick meeting and reached an agreement on a plan to promptly relocate and arrange new locations for households at risk of flooding; Conduct inspections and measurements of property compensation for households that have been flooded since August 13, 2011; Build internal roads from the water level of the reservoir in the resettlement area. Comrade Nguyen Ho Canh - Chairman of the District People's Committee added: In the immediate future, the district is deploying forces, mainly the militia and self-defense force of Luong Minh commune, to help people dismantle 30 flooded houses first and deploy them to live with households in safe places. To prepare for teaching and learning of teachers and students of the primary school, the district urgently directed the construction of temporary schools for children using bamboo and thatch.
