Cameroon at risk of being stripped of World Cup ticket

November 18, 2013 23:57

Cameroon secured their place at the 2014 World Cup with a 4-1 win over Tunisia in the second leg of the African play-off round that ended last night (November 17). But Tunisia still hopes to be in Brazil next summer through a lawsuit.

According to a new report in the Tunisian newspaper Akhbar, the country's Football Federation has filed a complaint with FIFA claiming that Cameroon used illegal players in the second leg of the African play-off round between the two teams on November 17. Specifically, the Tunisian Football Federation believes that Joel Matip and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are not eligible to play for Cameroon, because they have previously played for Germany's youth teams. If they prove this, Cameroon will be stripped of their right to participate.World Cup 2014, and the ticket they just got will be transferred back to Tunisia.

In the last match, Matip was on the reserve list but did not enter the field, while Choupo-Moting was brought in to replace Pierre Webo (the author of the opening goal of the match) in the 63rd minute.

At club level, both players are playing in the Bundesliga. Matip is playing for Schalke, Choupo-Moting is for Mainz.

It is true that both have the right to choose to play for the German national team orCameroon, but they have not played a single match for the German national team. Instead, Matip (22 years old) has played 16 matches for Cameroon, while Choupo-Moting (24 years old) has played 20 matches for the "Indomitable Lions". According to the current rules of theFIFA, it is completely legal for these two players to play for the Cameroon national team.

However, the confidence of the Tunisians made Cameroon fans feel uneasy. There is an interesting detail, Tunisia won the right to participate in this play-off round thanks to denouncing the illegal use of players, not the performance on the field. In the group stage, Tunisia was defeated by Cape Verde with a score of 2-0, and the team from the West African island nation was supposed to be Cameroon's opponent in this play-off match. However, Tunisia discovered that Cape Verde deliberately put Fernando Varela on the field by changing his shirt number even though this player was suspended. After the successful denouncing, Tunisia was awarded a 3-0 victory by FIFA in this match to qualify for the play-off round.
