On the morning of September 8, the National Election Committee of Cambodia (NEC) announced the official results of the election for the 5th National Assembly of Cambodia held on July 28. Accordingly, of the eight parties participating in the election, only the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) have seats in the National Assembly this term.
The official results of the election were announced at 8:00 a.m. on September 8 (local time) on Cambodian National Television (TVK) and National Radio (NRK), showing that the CPP won 68 out of 123 seats, with the remaining 55 seats belonging to the CNRP.

Previously, according to the provisional results announced by the NEC on August 12, 6.4 million out of more than 9.6 million voters went to the polls and the ruling CPP party won over 3.2 million votes; while the opposition CNRP party won over 2.9 million votes.
Following the CNRP’s complaint, the NEC and the Constitutional Council of Cambodia (CCC) conducted an investigation into the election results. However, the NEC and CCC’s investigation concluded that although there were some technical errors, they did not affect the election results.
The CNRP still does not recognize the election results because the party claims it won 63 seats and demands the establishment of a joint committee with the participation of the United Nations and representatives of civil society organizations at home and abroad to investigate.
On August 7, the CNRP held a large protest with the participation of at least 20,000 people to demand the postponement of the official announcement of the results of the National Assembly election.
According to the Cambodian Constitution, the new National Assembly will convene its first session 60 days after the election to elect the leaders of the supreme legislative body. The CPP will continue to rule Cambodia until 2018 and Mr. Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Royal Government for the 4th term, the CPP's candidate for Prime Minister for the 5th term, will continue to serve as Prime Minister for another term and form a new government.
In the 4th National Assembly term, the CPP had 90/123 seats in the National Assembly, the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) had 26 seats and the Human Rights Party (HRP) had three seats.
In 2012, the SRP and HRP parties merged into the CNRP party to participate in the race for the 5th National Assembly./.
