(Baonghean.vn) - There is no boarding house, so students at Mai Son Primary School, Mai Son border commune, remote Tuong Duong district have to stay temporarily in a warehouse to learn to read and write.

Mai Son Commune, Tuong Duong District is a border commune with a fairly large area, the terrain is divided and dispersed into different regions, many small residential areas, traffic is divided... Therefore, the school system is also greatly affected, leading to fragmentation in planning school locations. According to the General Education Program issued with Circular No. 32/2018/TT-BGDDT dated December 26, 2018 of the Ministry of Education and Training, Foreign Languages and Information Technology will become compulsory subjects for students in grades 3, 4, and 5. With the current scale of primary schools, investing in facilities, equipment, and arranging enough teachers to teach these two subjects at all schools in the current conditions is impossible. Faced with that reality, Mai Son Primary School had to organize to gather students to the main location to implement semi-boarding. Due to the severe lack of facilities, especially accommodation for students, the school had to requisition a warehouse for goods of a family near the school area, then renovate it into accommodation for students from separate locations. The area of this warehouse is about 63m2, this is the accommodation of nearly 100 students. Most of them are children of poor families of ethnic minorities such as Thai, Mong, Kho Mu. Due to the limited space, to have enough space for students to sleep, the school teachers took advantage of locally available materials to make bunk beds for students to sleep on. The frame is made of wood, and meters are used as stalls. Photo: Dinh Tuan
Only less than half of the students are allowed to sleep in bunk beds according to standards. Photo: Dinh Tuan
Moong Thanh Tung (Khmu ethnic group), a 4B grade student at Mai Son Primary School, shared: “My house is in Cha Lo village, so I have to walk more than 3 hours to get to school. In order not to be late for school, I stay at the school, where I am regularly cared for and encouraged by the teachers.” Photo: Dinh Tuan
To be close, caring, encouraging, taking care of and managing students, the school arranges for teachers to stay with the students. Photo: Dinh Tuan
Teacher Nguyen Dinh Tuan shared: “When they first arrived here, every night the children often cried because they missed home, especially the first graders. To help them ease their homesickness, we often stayed close to them, encouraged them, and talked to them. Thanks to that, the children gradually got used to living far away from their families. Every night, when the children were fast asleep, the teachers started preparing their lessons.” Photo: Dinh Tuan
Being a border commune, the weather is harsh. In winter, the weather is cold and piercing. Fearing that students will get sick from bathing in the stream, the school has spent money to buy a solar hot and cold system for students. Mr. Dao Van Hai, the school's principal, said: "Currently, the school's facilities are very lacking. Specifically, such as: a water storage system for daily life, a cafeteria, classrooms... While the school's budget is limited, we hope that organizations and individuals will pay attention and support students in the border area to ease their difficulties." Photo: Dinh Tuan
