Need to have conclusion about fish death phenomenon at Bau Com dam

(Baonghean.vn) Bau Com Dam, Nghi Kieu Commune, Nghi Loc District, is nearly 5 hectares wide and is located in a favorable location, so for many years it has been used and rented by local households to raise and release fish fry. However, after a while, the fish in the dam died en masse for unknown reasons.

As the contractor of Bau Com dam, Mr. Ngo Van Dac (Hamlet 9 - Nghi Kieu) is the most worried person when many mornings when visiting the dam, he saw big and small fish dead, covering the water surface. In 2010, all the snakehead fish in the dam that were ready to be harvested were lost. This year, in early December, nearly 100 kg of grass carp fry that his family had just released suddenly died. People nearby, seeing many dead fish, rushed to collect them to feed pigs and dogs.

Although there has been no conclusion from the authorities, the local people here affirm that the fish deaths are due to environmental pollution (specifically, wastewater). For many years, wastewater has been flowing down to Thay Ho field and then following the flow, flowing straight down to Bau Com dam.

To prove it, the village chief Nguyen Van Luan led us through a dam about 200 meters long, pointing to the field where he said: "Every time there is a lot of wastewater, fish die in large numbers, and people living around the dam have to cover their faces with wet towels every morning when the wind blows from the west to avoid the smell in order to sleep. Some families have windows facing the dam and have to build them to block the smell." Mr. Tran Van Thong from Nghi Kieu commune, who often goes to work here, said: In the past, people in the village often used water from this dam to bathe and wash clothes, but for several years now they have not dared to use it anymore because washing their feet and hands makes them itchy.

According to the Secretary of Hamlet 9, Nguyen Thanh Hai, the people have repeatedly complained about this pollution in hamlet and commune meetings. However, currently, no functional agency of the district or province has come to take samples, check and give the people an accurate conclusion. It is thought that the functional agencies also need to pay attention to the pollution problem in Nghi Kieu commune, Nghi Loc district, or at least need to have an accurate conclusion about the phenomenon of dead fish at Bau Com dam so that people can have a solution.
