Negotiations needed to end the war in Afghanistan
US and UN diplomats have made new recommendations on how to end the conflict in Afghanistan that has lasted more than three decades.
US and UN diplomats on March 23 called on the Obama administration to commit to intensifying diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue. In a report released by the New Century Foundation, veteran diplomats pointed out that negotiations are the only way to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan. In addition, the diplomats also said that the three main components participating in the negotiations include the Afghan government, the Taliban and its important neighbor Pakistan.

Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, former UN special envoy for Afghanistan, one of the authors of this report, said that there should be only one channel of dialogue and a third neutral party to lead this process.
Thomas Pickering, former US undersecretary of state for political affairs, said that now is the most appropriate time to conduct negotiations because military operations are currently at a standstill. Thomas also emphasized that the demand for the Taliban to cut ties with Al Qaeda or foreign forces to withdraw from Afghanistan should be considered as the goals of the negotiations, not simply the conditions of the negotiations.
