The youngest son, though already in seventh grade, had the body of a primary school student, always holding tightly onto the portrait of his deceased mother, his eyes staring blankly. In the dock was the defendant Nguyen Van Thanh (born in 1974, residing in Quynh Ba commune, Quynh Luu), also the biological father of the three unfortunate children.

In court, to justify his crime, Thanh "claimed" that the couple had long-standing conflicts, his wife had left him two years ago and had not taken care of the family or raised the children. Feeling abandoned and lonely, Thanh could not control his anger and committed the murder. However, Thanh's testimony was refuted by Nguyen Thi Loan - the defendant's eldest daughter. After all the hardships that his mother had endured in the past, now she had a chance to confide, Loan said that there were frequent conflicts, arguments and fights between the defendant Thanh and the victim Nguyen Thi Chanh.

In the eyes of his children, Nguyen Van Thanh is a fierce father. In addition to regularly beating his wife, Thanh rarely touches the farm work. Despite being treated cruelly, Ms. Chanh has to work hard to take care of her three children. According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Nghe An province, on July 17, 2013, after organizing the wedding of her eldest daughter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chanh went to a neighbor's house to play. At about 5:00 p.m. that same day, Nguyen Van Thanh prepared a knife and put it on his back and went to look for his wife. Seeing his wife sitting and talking with some neighbors, Thanh went into the house and pulled his wife out to the yard to talk. Afraid of something bad happening, the neighbor grabbed Ms. Chanh's hand and pulled her back, but because she was weak and had a small child in one hand, she could not resist the strength of the strong man. Thanh pulled out the knife and put it on his back and stabbed his wife in the left chest. The stab pierced her heart and caused Ms. Nguyen Thi Chanh to die on the spot. Nguyen Van Thanh was arrested shortly after.

When the representative of the Procuracy proposed a sentence of 19 to 20 years in prison for their father, the panel of judges called Thanh's three children to stand up to present their opinions on the level of punishment and Thanh's defense lawyer suggested a reduction in the sentence for their father, but among Thanh's three children present in court, the eldest child, Nguyen Thi Loan, and the youngest son, who is in 7th grade, insisted that the court give their father a punishment that is appropriate for the act of killing their mother. Only the second child asked the court to consider a reduction in the sentence. Since their mother died and their father went to prison, the two children have returned to live with their grandparents.

When he had his last word, Nguyen Van Thanh burst into tears, asking the court to consider reducing his sentence so that he could return home soon to help his wife raise and educate their two children. Although he confessed honestly and repented, considering Thanh's criminal behavior as hooliganism, just because of a small conflict between husband and wife, Thanh coldly used a knife to take his wife's life, the panel sentenced Nguyen Van Thanh to life in prison for murder.

The court announced the verdict, Thanh was quickly escorted to a special vehicle to return to the detention center. Seeing his son being led away, Mr. Vien - Thanh's father quickly held his grandson's hand and approached his father. He met the escorting officer and said as if explaining, "He must take responsibility for his actions, but at his old age, I want him to say a few words to his children so that they can study with peace of mind and he can also reform to atone for his mistakes." Before the trial, he still refused to ask for a reduced sentence, but when he met his father, he fell into his arms and sobbed as if he wanted to find a bit of the warmth of his parents. His mother died, his father received a life sentence, the two children soon suffered a great shock at the threshold of life.
