The World Health Organization (WHO) and experts are researching treatments and vaccines against MERS that could be used to fight the coronavirus.

WHO and its expert networks are considering whether treatments and vaccines against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) can work against the new coronavirus that caused the pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, China, World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said on January 24.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva (Switzerland), Mr. Jasarevic said that the number of new coronavirus infections could continue to increase in China and it is too early to assess the severity of the epidemic.

"As with other outbreaks, we tend to focus initially on the severe cases and ignore the mild cases. As we step up surveillance, more cases are detected. The problem is not really the number of cases because we know they will increase," said Mr. Jasarevic.

WHO and its experts are currently studying whether treatments and vaccines against MERS can be used to fight the new coronavirus that causes pneumonia in China.

According to scientists, the results of initial analysis show that the new coronavirus in China (2019-nCoV) has amino acid similarities with the virus that caused the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003.
