The more you play video games, the easier it is to get fat.
A Canadian study showed that playing video games about an hour before a meal increases energy intake by 163 calories more than needed.
This is the conclusion drawn from a study on adolescents and published in the l'American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This finding contributes to clarifying the relationship between time spent in front of a computer screen and the risk of weight gain and obesity.
Scientists from the Eastern Ontario Research Institute (Canada) followed 22 teenagers with an average age of 17. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of video games on their eating habits.
On the first day of the lab study, participants played video games for an hour before lunch. On the second day, they relaxed for an hour before eating. In both cases, their eating during lunch was observed and recorded. Then, 22 of the teens who participated in the study also recorded what they ate at home for the rest of the day.
The results showed that after playing video games, players tended to eat more at lunch and throughout the day, their energy intake increased by 163 calories compared to the day they relaxed before lunch.
According to scientists, the stressful effects of video games increase appetite in players.
