Warning of potential dangers when driving through flooded areas during the rainy season

When the rainy season comes and causes deep flooding on many roads, many drivers still ignore the risks and try to drive through the water. This seemingly “overcoming difficulties” action can cause serious damage to the vehicle, even threatening the lives of those inside.

Surely everyone has been in a situation where they were driving in heavy rain, the road was slippery, visibility was limited and they suddenly faced a deep flooded road blocking the way.

Even if the water level doesn't seem too bad, stop and think carefully. Driving through floodwaters is not only a dangerous choice, it can also be very costly.

Water can quickly penetrate the engine and vital components, causing serious damage, especially if the vehicle is flooded to the point where the mechanical parts can no longer dry out.

But the physical damage is only part of the story. Beneath the murky water surface may lie uncovered manholes, sharp objects, collapsed roads, and other unforeseen hazards.

Remember, you can’t see what’s waiting below the water. And sometimes, the price you pay isn’t just the cost of repairs, but also your own safety. It’s best to take the safer route and steer clear of the flooded area.

Serious consequences can occur if you ignore warnings and attempt to drive through flooded areas.

One of the most serious risks when driving through flooded areas is the risk of water entering the engine through the air intake system, leading to a phenomenon called “hydrolock”. When the combustion chamber is filled with water instead of air, the engine cannot compress and suddenly stops working.

This is one of the most common and serious consequences of driving in floodwaters and in many cases it means complete engine destruction, resulting in huge repair costs and no quick fix.

Electrical systems are also particularly vulnerable. Water can seep into wires and connectors and cause short circuits. In electric vehicles, the risk is even higher, as water can penetrate the protective gaskets that protect the battery, reducing performance and making it unsafe.

Electrical problems can arise unexpectedly, from flickering headlights to airbags not deploying properly. Even air conditioning systems are not immune; if water gets in, the compressor can be severely damaged.

Inside the cabin, the car’s interior is also heavily affected. Floor mats, seats and soundproofing materials, when soaked in water, will easily develop mold, causing unpleasant odors and affecting the health of the user. This damage not only takes time to fix but also significantly reduces the value of the car.

From a safety standpoint, driving through fast-moving water can cause loss of control and a vehicle to be swept away. Just 15 cm of water can cause a loss of traction between the tires and the road, and at depths of 0.6 m, even SUVs and pickup trucks can be swept away.

The risk goes beyond physical damage, with more than half of flood deaths occurring while victims are in vehicles, according to the National Weather Service (NOAA).

So instead of taking risks, choose the safe option of avoiding flooded roads. It is the simplest way to protect not only your car but also your life.
