Some Chinese people are secretly conducting surveys and renting land to "grow seedless watermelons" in Gia Lai province.

Recently, in Ayun Pa, Ia Pa, Kong Chro, Chu Prong districts and An Khe town (Gia Lai), Chinese traders have come to survey and rent land with the purpose of growing seedless watermelons.

They deposit money to buy watermelons from small traders at prices 2 to 3 times higher than domestic prices, in order to export to China. Strangely, the Chinese also bring small traders from other provinces to facilitate the purchase after harvest.

The “cake” that Chinese traders drew up when contracting with farmers in Gia Lai province was a watermelon variety imported from China with many advantages such as seedless, large fruit, very sweet. Accordingly, if people lease land or grow and sell, they will benefit with prices twice as high as domestic prices, and Chinese traders will buy as much as they grow.

Faced with the above signs of illegal commercial activities, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province has issued a document to the Provincial Police, the Department of Industry and Trade, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and districts and towns to raise vigilance and prevention.

The document stated: The fact that Chinese traders rent land and grow watermelons at high prices leads to people renting land or converting to other crops to expand the watermelon growing area, potentially causing an imbalance leading to a surplus crisis. And, it does not exclude the possibility of stagnant products and falling prices, directly affecting the lives of farmers.

In addition, Gia Lai province has directed departments and branches to quickly investigate the methods and tricks of renting land for watermelon cultivation. At the same time, it has requested local authorities to tighten the market and inspect purchasing points to handle illegal agricultural product exchanges.

Raising vigilance The fact that Chinese people have flooded into the area without going through local authorities and have chosen to rent land in remote areas and ethnic minority areas has raised suspicions of economic security plots.

Currently, 7 Chinese people have appeared in Gia Lai province to survey and rent land. However, before they could sign contracts with farmers, the provincial police in coordination with the authorities detained them and expelled them from the area.

On March 29, in An Khe town, 3 Chinese people came to reside to survey land for rent and purchase melons through local traders. In Chu Prong district, 4 Chinese people registered for temporary residence to carry out similar intentions.

In particular, also in Chu Prong district, in December 2013, the above subjects had appeared with the intention of renting land and growing melons. Being vigilant, Border Guard Station 727 (located in Chu Prong district) detained the above subjects and handed them over to Gia Lai Provincial Police to expel them from the area.

In Gia Lai province, there were previously Chinese traders accompanied by interpreters who, through local traders, purchased pepper roots and stems with the intention of sabotaging production. The Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee directed the Provincial Police and other departments and branches to destroy nearly 300 kg of pepper roots and stems while they were on their way to be sold to the Chinese./.
