Indian police arrest Mumbai terror mastermind

Xinhua news agency quoted a senior police official as saying on June 25 that New Delhi police have arrested a key Indian figure believed to be one of the six masterminds of a group of 10 Pakistani militants who came to India by sea from Karachi and carried out the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

"According to a tip-off from intelligence agencies, we arrested Abu Hamza, a member of the Indian Islamic Fundamentalist Guerrilla Group, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport when he arrived in New Delhi from the Gulf on June 22. He is an Indian national and is believed to have gone to Pakistan to train personnel for the Mumbai terror attacks," the official said.

According to the official, "Hamza was in Pakistan when the Mumbai attacks took place on November 26, 2008. He was one of the masterminds of the massacre, guided the terrorists who carried out the attack, even trained the attackers in Hindi and scouted Mumbai before the massacre."

Hamza is also wanted in connection with other attacks in India, including the 2010 Chinnaswamy Stadium attack in Bangalore and several terror attacks in Gujarat.
