A 63-year-old man was shot at a security checkpoint at New Orleans International Airport this morning (March 21, Vietnam time) after slashing police officers with a knife and attacking them with a spray bottle.

AP news agency quoted Jefferson County Police Chief Newell Normand as saying at a press conference that Richard White entered the airport and passed through the TSA pre-check line when he was stopped by a security officer.

According to Mr. Norman, White attacked the man with a spray bottle, then used a knife to slash the right hand of a female officer. He continued to spray pepper spray at the male police officer, forcing another officer to open fire, hitting the subject in the left chest, right thigh and face. White was taken to a local hospital but was "unresponsive."

One bystander suffered a scrape on his arm trying to escape the danger zone while several others suffered scrapes from bumping into objects, the police chief added.

There is currently no information about White's connection to New Orleans International Airport.

"We don't know if he was on the plane. We're still piecing together witness accounts," Norman said.
